"Every Man is Himself and Belongs To Himself"-Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass (February 14th 1818- February 20th 1895) is considered by many to be one of the finest statesmen in American history. Douglass was born a slave however in 1938 he gained his freedom by escape. His experinces as a slave prompted him to get involved in the abolitionist movement. Where he began an exceptional carrer as a speaker and writer. His writing and speeches covered a number subjects from the evils of slavery to women's suffrage and education. One topic that he reflected on was the idea of "Race Pride"....
